About Us

Closing The Gap is a non-profit dedicated to raising money to fund programs in the Sacramento region that help local students avoid the academic achievement gap. Our all-volunteer board oversees fundraising, business operations, and grant awards. Committees of community volunteers provide support with organizing events and selecting grant recipients. More than 90 percent of the dollars raised go directly back into the community.

Closing the Gap
Dedicated to closing the academic achievement gap in the Sacramento region

Closing the Gap is committed to helping local students prepare for their tomorrows. Unfortunately, the majority are graduating from high school unprepared. They are caught in the academic gap. The academic achievement gap is the fact that African American, Latino, Southeast Asian, and low-income Whites are underperforming.

The reasons are many. But, there is no escaping the data: three out of four are finishing high school without having completed the coursework necessary to apply to college, let alone be admitted.  And while many advancements have been made through the efforts of educators, policymakers, and non-profits, there is still an overwhelming number of students leaving our high schools who are not qualified to enter a four-year college or university.

It is projected that over the next five to ten years, 60% of jobs in high-growth fields will require or already require a four-year degree.  Closing the Gap recognizes the need to provide our students with stronger, more abundant opportunities to achieve.  And so, together with our partners, we seek to continue our efforts to support programs that do just that.  Please join us in this endeavor.
